Lady Raiders bounce Quitman

The Quitman Lady Bulldogs ended their season with a 66-36 home loss to the state-ranked Winnsboro Lady Raiders.

Freshman Annabelle Popek gave a glimpse of what the future holds for the Lady Bulldogs. Popek hit for 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Quitman. Popek’s game was solid, especially as she had to deal with Winnsboro’s star post Faith Acker. Acker will be attending NCAA Division One Louisiana-Monroe next season to continue her stellar career at the next level.

Coach Blake Hamrick will return the bulk of his team next year. Senior Kaysi Parker added six points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Larkin Spears also had six points and Sadie Vander Schaaf had five.

Senior Maddy Pence has been out of action in the final games because of a wrist injury. Quitman was also missing junior Addie Marcee who was in concussion protocol after a hard fall at Mt. Vernon.

The Lady Raiders took an early lead and never gave it up. The Lady Bulldogs worked hard and hustled until the final buzzer. Although it was a 30-point loss, the Lady Bulldogs showed how much they have improved throughout the season with the young squad.

Returning next season for Quitman are Popek, Vander Schaaf, Marcee, Spears,  Allie Berry, Ashley Davis, Sophia Reynolds, Alexus Richey and Kaylee Wood.

Hamrick used his bench and was constantly substituting, giving a lot of experience on the floor for the younger players.

Quitman ended the year with a 16-16 slate and tied for the final playoff spot with Mineola with a 5-7 district record. Mineola defeated the Lady Bulldogs in a play-in game Friday.
