Pilot Club of Quitman to host bicycle rodeo and Brainminders program

Posted

Spring is here and summer approaches. As an emphasis on brain health, the Pilot Club of Quitman will host a program for first and second graders in Quitman, Alba Golden and Yantis. A BrainMinders Puppet Show will highlight the event for all first and second graders followed by a Bicycle Rodeo for all first graders. This annual event, in conjunction with the Texas Medical Association, gives bicycle helmets to the first graders, teaches proper adjust of helmets and safe riding habits on bicycles. Since Texas Medical

Association began the Hard Hats for Little Heads program, the supporting team of physicians has given away more than 150,000 helmets and a vast part of the giving has occurred through the Pilot Clubs as they conduct the Bicycle Rodeos and BrainMinders Programs.

Local law enforcement attends the rodeo to help emphasize safety and to teach the recognition of street signs: STOP, CAUTION, ALL WAY STOPS, SPEED LIMITS, and other vital information. Having law enforcement personnel interact with the children helps teach a sense of friendship and protection. Pilot Club members fit the helmets and conduct the rodeo as the youngsters ride their bicycles through a maze of lines, curves and stops.

The Puppet Show is performed with favorite animal puppets teaching important lessons of brain health and accident prevention.

Bill Prague, Pilot Bicycle Rodeo Chairperson, says 196 first grade children will be given helmets and attend the puppet show. An additional 183 second graders will be treated to the puppet show. He announced the following schedule for the three schools:

Quitman: Wednesday, May 4 at 8:30 a.m.

Yantis: Wednesday, May 4 at 1:00 p.m.

Alba Golden: Thursday, May 5 at 8:30 a.m.

As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, this Bicycle Rodeo and BrainMinders project is a major contribution from the Pilot Club of Quitman in their quest to help prevent brain injuries to children.
