Lake Country symphony returning

The Lake Country Symphonic Band will present its spring concert Sunday, April 25, at 2 p.m. at the Mineola Civic Center.

Titled “Music Is Medicine,” the group will present an afternoon of various styles of music from marches to film, opera to Broadway.

The concert will also feature the world premiere of composer Kelly Bennette’s “Dies Irae et Tuba Mirum.” Also featured on the program will be “Midway March” by John Williams; “Somewhere” from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein; “Intermezzo Sinfonico” from Pietro Mascagni’s opera Cavalleria Rusticana; “Southwest Saga,” reminiscent of the great western film scores; “Spirit of Cashel,” an Irish piece with shades of River Dance; “Emperata Overture,” featuring guest conductor and band trumpeter Jim Little; theme from Disney’s The Mandalorian; and “Joyful Variations,” based on the 4th movement of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.

The band, under the direction of Mike Holbrook, consists of adults and students from all over East Texas, ages 13 to 84. Towns represented by band members include Mineola, Quitman, Alba, Gilmer, Hawkins, Wills Point, Tyler, Kilgore, Lindale, Longview and Palestine. Additionally, some of the musicians are band directors at several of the local school districts.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children 11 and under. Those with season tickets from 2020 will be pleased to know that those season tickets are good for the 2021 season.

Following this performance, the next concert will be on July 4th for the Mineola Fireworks Show at the Mineola Civic Center. The band will provide entertainment beginning around 8:30 p.m. leading up to the fireworks display.
