Volunteers with Eagle Fest, a two-day festival that celebrates Rains County being declared the “Eagle Capital of Texas” by the Texas Legislature in 1995 as part of the effort to preserve the American bald eagle, announce it will add some new wings for the 22nd annual event be held Jan. 28 and 29.

The Rains Area Chamber of Commerce will now collaborate with the Lake Fork Chamber of Commerce and Tawakoni Regional Chamber of Commerce to bring festival-goers even more activities and educational opportunities.

“This festival plays a crucial part in educating not only our community, but also surrounding communities on the unique importance of our location for the American Bald Eagle,” said Tracy Hatton, Eagle Fest chairperson. “Eagle Fest, through our bus and barge tours, enables participants to see the eagles in their natural habitats, while also learning more about their history, near extinction, preferred climates, and hunting preferences.”

Lake Fork, Lake Tawakoni, and surrounding areas are nesting and feeding grounds for bald eagles and over 260 varieties and species of wild birds. Festival-goers will be able to attend the up-close live Birds of Prey shows featuring the American bald eagle, red tail hawks and owls. Additionally, the festival will include bird and animal exhibits, programs, live music and entertainment, a nature photo contest, and educational speakers.

There will be live chainsaw carving demonstration hosted by the Lake Fork Chamber at Oak Ridge Marina on Saturday, Jan. 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Artist Burt Fleming of Zachary, Louisiana, is a featured wood carver at the State Fair of Texas. “Burt has a natural talent that draws in a crowd,” Hatton added. “He takes his chainsaw and produces excitement and entertainment as detailed, impressive art sculptures take form with speed and ease.”

Exhibitors from the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, Caldwell Zoo, Texas Brigades, Mitotilizti Yaoyollohtli Aztec Dance Group, Blackland Prairie Raptor Center, Critterman, Snake Encounters and Last Chance Forever will be in attendance.
