The Quitman Bulldogs did it the hard way, scoring six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to top Winona 15-14 last Friday.

The Bulldogs seemed to have the game wrapped up leading 8-5 after four innings, but Winona came back with three runs in the sixth inning, making it 8-8. Quitman added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning giving the Bulldogs a 9-8 advantage. Winona got a run in the top of the seventh to make it 9-9, sending the game to extra innings.

The Wildcat comeback continued as they scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 14 -9 lead over the Bulldogs. Quitman did not give up, and just when things looked dismal, the Bulldogs clawed their way to six runs in the bottom of the extra inning to take the 15-14 victory.

In the Bulldog eighth inning, Justin Matthews drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring home Cody Hawley with the winning run. Landon Richey started the wild Quitman comeback with a double and stole home to cut the margin to 14-10. Quitman scored a pair of runs on a hit by Ford Tannebaum, making it 14-12.

Hawley drew a walk which forced in Ford Tannebaum, and Jack Tannebaum got tossed out at the plate on a good throw by the Winona second baseman. Mason Reynolds scored when Richey drew another walk tying the game at 14-14.

The drama continued as Matthews was at the plate with the bases full and a 3-2 count. The next pitch was a ball, and Hawley came in with the winning run.

Quitman had 11 hits to 12 for Winona. The Bulldogs were hurt by seven errors while Winona committed five errors.

After traveling to Harmony Tuesday, the Bulldogs will travel to Grand Saline for a non-district contest followed by an April 6 game at Mount Vernon.
