The Gospels of Matthew and Luke come to life on stage in Mineola as Lake Country Playhouse opens the 2017 season in musical style with “Godspell” this weekend and next.
Performances are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, this weekend and next. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday matinees start at 2 p.m. The box office will open one hour prior to curtain, with doors opening 30 minutes before show start.
Composed by Stephen Schwartz, the show has a long history of performances in several languages and nearly every country on the planet following its opening off Broadway in 1971. It features several parables from the Books of Matthew and Luke mixed in with songs with lyrics from traditional hymns. A later updated version was released in a Broadway revival in 2011.
The show is under the guidance of first-time director Tonya Slayton, and features a talented cast led by Micah Graham as Jesus. Rodney Mize portrays John the Baptist, and Anthony Wright performs the role of Judas. Jill Brandon is music director and plays a disciple, along with Cassandra Sampson, Anita Tucker, Patricia Wright, Cindy Karch, Emalee Chappa, Jackson Duncan, Zion Olajide and Missy Armstrong.
