To the editor,
After Donald Trump’s recent speech, which encouraged police officers to be more violent during arrests, some of the police departments released statements opposing his views and stating that they were committed to their officers remaining constitutional, respectful, and ethical. They were concerned that those incendiary words would reduce trust in their communities and further damage the already fragile relationship between police and citizens. We have not heard how our local department feels about this issue. Can we trust Mineola police and Wood County sheriff’s department to follow constitutional rules when arresting citizens? Perhaps a statement on this matter would reassure Wood County residents that law enforcement is still on their side, working in a respectful, ethical, and constitutional manner.
