Wood County commissioners unanimously approved adoption of a $0.5461 tax rate during last Tuesday’s special session. The rate is higher than last year’s rate of $0.5015.

Commissioners adopt tax rate

Wood County commissioners unanimously approved adoption of a $0.5461 tax rate during last Tuesday’s special session. The rate is higher than last year’s rate of $0.5015. The county is adopting the effective tax rate, which is actually the same tax dollars as last year.

County Judge Bryan Jeanes maintains the rate will raise more taxes from maintenance and operations than last year’s rate. The budget this year will raise more revenue from property taxes than last year’s budget by $48,869. The property tax rate to be raised from new property added to the tax rolls this year is $171,523.69. Total revenue is $19,955,952 with total expenditures is $19,874,952, an increase from last year.

Money was put in for elections equipment which totaled $60,000 and another $7,500 was added to cover other election expenditures. Professional fees for justice of the peace offices went up to $30,000 and the county is paying an additional $8,000 to the appraisal district. Rising software costs caused the technology department to go up $35,000.

Commissioners also chose to pay $28,000 for a new vehicle for the Precinct #2 constable. The Wood County Airport is getting an increase of $18,000 due to a grant for renovations calling for a 20 percent match.
