Liberty United Methodist Church will celebrate an extensive expansion and remodeling project of the building’s sanctuary with a community open house on Sunday from 2-4 p.m.
The 115-member church is located on Highway 154 six miles east of Quitman. The expansion added just over 42 percent to the square footage. It increased the seating capacity by 36 people and a larger bell and choir area have been included in the renovated facility.
The renovation included gutting of the sanctuary building to the original support structure, much of which dated back to 1881. At that time the church was located a mile north of its present location in a community known then as Oak Grove.
The project began in August and was completed in time for this past Sunday’s service. A formal dedication service is being planned on Sunday, Jan. 28.
Liberty United Methodist and Quitman United Methodist Church are both served by Reverend Keefe Cropper who was appointed to serve the two churches in July.
Records show that the church has been served by 52 ministers over its 136-year history.
