Local band students excel at UIL solo and ensemble contest

Band students from Wood County schools earned high scores at the UIL Solo and Ensemble festival at Pine Tree High School on Feb. 8.

Many students advanced to the state contest in Pflugerville on June 3 as a result of their hard work and achievements.

Local band students excel at UIL solo and ensemble contest

Band students from Wood County schools earned high scores at the UIL Solo and Ensemble festival at Pine Tree High School on Feb. 8.

Many students advanced to the state contest in the Austin area during the first weekend of June as a result of their hard work and achievements.

Quitman returned with 28 division one medals with 11 students advancing to state. Mike Fry, Tristan Cheek, Halee Hightower, Mikayla Hubbard, Oscar Roman, Ashton Goss, Aiden Corrier, Vincent Ogg and Diego Orsonio will be advancing to state.

These Quitman students received a first division score on their solo or ensemble performances: Brooklyn Marcee, Karli Cowart, Bailey Hughes, Jazmin Rojas, Madison Holland, Hunter Batchelder, Dylan Marshall, Arturo Delgadillo, Drake Lee, Gracie Danner, Makenzie Ragan, Hannah Smith, Kaitlynn Barnett, Madysen Miller, Rayann Rowland, Chaynne Derouin, Mike Fry, Halee Hightower, Mikalya Hubbard, Oscar Roman, Tristan Cheek, Ashton Goss, Vincent Ogg, Aiden Corrier and Diego Orsonio.  

Quitman Band Director Michael Barron congratulated the students on their hard work and achievements.

Mineola’s Sound of the Swarm band brought home 82 division one medals. Forty-two members advanced to the state contest. These were record numbers for the band.

Annalee Cook, Tish Yates, Bree Williams, Ana Cruz, Ellery D'Angelo, Emily Phonsnasinh, Makayla Skinner, Lin Dong, Taylor Ihlenfeldt, Leonica Villedo, Megan Holt, Joneth Esquivel, Ana Westberry, Lena Hughes, Toni Brannan, Lanie Yager, Ramiro Mata, Arelia Palma, Alana Galaz, Zach Haddock, Andrea Valdez, Adam Dievendorf, Caden Roberts, Gabby Wolf, Brianna Bethel, Cazz Haddock, Luz Tinajero, Jackson Vandover, Emmitt Brown, Bianca Delgadillo, Valerie Garcia, Anjel Garcia, Isreal Rivera, Michael Trocolli and Armando Veloz qualified for the state contest.

Hawkins band students earned 27 first division medals at the competition. Twenty-five students advanced to the state contest.

The following Hawkins band students earned division one medals and advanced to state: Emalee Chappa, Ramey Stevens, Kenneth Cole, Zach Willard, Dalton Wages, Avery Frazier, Ethan Stone Will Larsson, Zach Collette, Destiny Derma, Drew Dacus, Will Bryan, Chris Horn, Cortney Pope, Candace Pope, Heidi Wilcox, Joy Broderick, Jessica Henneous, Alexis Hudson, Ashley Wilcox, Whitney Posey, Jacob Price, Mason Williams and Evan Prater.

This is the most students advancing to state in at least the last 10 years, Hawkins Band Director Jeff Wilson said.

For Alba-Golden band, 13 students achieve a division two rating, and eight students earned a Division one score. Jacob Cameron, Seth McAninch, Lizzie Whitecotton, Kyle Kennedy, Aurora Melton, Fatima Cerrito, Savannah Gurley and Gabe Mullen all earned a medal.
