Local DAR chapter reaps state, national awards

What a great way to start off the 2018-2019 business year for our area’s hard-working members of The Daughters of the American Revolution. The Piney Woods Regent’s Council met on Aug. 21 at the Holly Tree County Club in Tyler for its semi-annual meeting and election of officers. The purpose of the Regent’s Council is to bring members and regents of local Daughters of the American Revolution chapters together for sharing ideas and activities in support of each other and to promote the mission of the NSDAR. This summer’s meeting had a large attendance of 42 ladies and has welcomed growing the team by combining with the Northeast Regent’s Council.

The business meeting included updates and accomplishment by representing chapters members and installation of new officers for 2018-2019. Officers elected include area residents: President Traci Jones (Trammels Trace Chapter in Atlanta, Texas), Vice President Tamara Moler (Martha Laird Chapter in Mount Pleasant, Secretary Sherrie Archer (Neches Trace Chapter in Canton), and Treasurer Barbara Gillies of Lindale (Elizabeth Denton English Chapter in Mineola.).

Gillies (current chapter regent) spoke on behalf of the Elizabeth Denton English chapter, giving recognition to the chapter’s 2017-2018 awards. The chapter received second place in the National Award in Historic Preservation contest (Honeymoon Cottage in Quitman). It took first place in the State Award in Historic Preservation contest with the Honeymoon Cottage in Quitman. The chapter also took first place for the State World War 1 report, and was recognized for continued contribution of service to the local Watkins-Logan Texas State Veterans Home.

The special guest and speaker for the Aug. 21 meeting was Madam State Regent Susan Tillman, whose program “Letting our Lights Shine” encouraged our Texas Daughters to highlight our continued good works within our local communities and service to our country. She also discussed her State Regent’s project for 2018.
