McFarland school damaged, driver dies in crash
A one-vehicle accident at Addie McFarland Community Center on S. Stone St. in Mineola occurred Sunday, March 22 at 3:37 p.m.
Anthony Ray Griffin, a 51-year-old male, ran through the stop sign at the intersection of Belcher and Stone Streets and crashed into the gym.
Emergency medical services, first responders and police officers responded, and Griffin was found unconscious at the scene.
When first responders with the Mineola Fire Department arrived, CPR was already in progress by the officers. The fire department assisted EMS with the driver and stabilized the building at the crash site.
Griffin was transported to Quitman UTHealth, where he was later pronounced deceased by Precinct One Justice of the Peace Tony Gilbreath. An autopsy has been ordered.
The Addie McFarland Center is in clean-up mode. No one was at the center at the time of the accident, and the board hasn’t heard anything back from the insurance company. For now, the gym portion of the center is boarded up and unusable, but there are plans for repair.
