MHS and MMS bands advance to state competition
The Mineola High School and Middle School bands recently entered the Outstanding Performance Series (OPS) competition.
The OPS competition is managed by the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) that encompasses all 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A high schools and their middle school feeders. The bands may submit recordings of their UIL contest selections. Each selection is judged individually.
The Mineola MS band had two selections advance to the area round, and the Mineola HS band had all three selections advance to the area round.
After the area round, the Mineola MS band advanced one of their selections to the state competition and the Mineola HS advanced all three of their selections to the state competition.
The state round of the OPS competition will take place at the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention in San Antonio on July 25. Both the Mineola MS and HS bands have the opportunity to win this prestigious event. The winners will have their recording sent to all band directors throughout the state on a state recorded CD.
The Mineola HS band has also entered the Honor Band competition held every other year, alternating with the State Marching Band competition. Since winning state in 2017, the Mineola HS band now has the opportunity to win the Honor Band competition (indoor concert music). The Mineola HS band advanced to the area competition in first place at the region level. They then advanced out of the area in first place again to make it to the state level competition. The state round of the Honor Band competition will also be awarded at the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention in San Antonio on July 25. The winner of the Honor Band competition will then perform at the annual Texas Music Educators Association in San Antonio on Feb. 14.
These accomplishments top off a great year filled with sweepstakes to both Mineola HS and MS bands and their fine programs. The students have surpassed every expectation and have continued to grow the fine arts programs in the Mineola schools. Their band directors are extremely proud of the work that these students do day in and day out.
