The Mineola varsity boys and girls track teams were crowned champions of district 12-3A at the district meet hosted April 11 at Rains High School.

It was the first district championship for girls track and field in the history of the program. Head coach Bill Self stated, “This year we had the numbers, talent, focus, and work ethic to win the first girls team district championship.”

Alba-Golden captured second in the girls meet, and Quitman placed fifth. In the boys meet, the Bulldogs took fourth and Alba-Golden finished fifth.

Luke Blackwell, Mineola athletic director, stressed how much importance the athletic department places on track and field participation.

A firm believer in junior varsity sports as well, he was especially proud of the first-place finish of the junior varsity girls team and the second-place finish of the junior varsity boys team.

The district meet running finals commenced under cloudy skies with a cool, light breeze from the north. After an hour, the skies lightened and bright sunshine illuminated the track. The meet featured several close finishes as the best athletes from the area competed for the claim to be the fastest, strongest, most athletic or most well-conditioned.

The Mineola girls team tallied maximum points from the following first-place finishers: Abby Kratzmeyer in the 100 meter dash and pole vault, Meghan Brewington in the 400 meter dash and 800 meter run, Alaina Lopez in the 300 meter hurdles, Alia Freeman in the high jump and Tahjae Black in the triple jump. The Lady Jackets swept the relays winning gold in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 events.

In the boys competition, Dalton Rogers secured first in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.37 and Shaw Franklin secured first with a time of 22.97 in the 200 meter dash. David Amador in the 1600 meter run, Wylie Franks in the 110 meter hurdles and high jump, and Devin Cormier in the 300 meter hurdles, all produced blue-ribbon finishes for the Yellowjackets. The boys also swept the three sprint relays.

Self described the environment within Mineola’s athletic department: “The overall track program is important at Mineola and director Blackwell laid the foundation of high expectations over the past 10 years for both boys and girls track.”That foundational success was evident at the district meet as Self and boys head track coach Heath Ragle claimed championship trophies. “We are committed to providing quality coaching and encouragement to lead our athletes to perform at the highest levels,” he concluded.
