Wood County teams compete in third THSBA tournament

The Texas High School Bass Fishing Association held its third tournament of the year Saturday, Nov. 5, at Lake Palestine. There were 214 teams that competed in the tournament and 24 teams form Wood County schools.

Quitman

The Quitman Bulldogs had the highest finish of any school from Wood County with Langdon Bautista and Layton Brown finishing in fourth place with a weight of 16.32 pounds.

Dawson Hudman and Ben Burroughs had 6.18 pounds and a 63rd place finish to round out Quitman’s top 100 finishers. JC Brisindine and Neely Duncan took 103rd place with a weight of 3.74 pounds and Alexis McPhearson and Nick Poppenhuser finished 149th place with 1.05 pounds. Wyatt Bashioum and Trey Berry were unable to end the day with any weight and finished tied for 162nd place.

Mineola

Dalton Hendrix and Connor Dobbs was the top team finisher for the Mineola Yellowjackets with a 26th place finish and a weight of 9.89 pounds.

River Simonek and Tristan Rychlik finished 39th (8.82 pounds) and Bailey Mischnick and Dalton Robles finished 89th (4.53 pounds) to give Mineola three teams in the top 100.

Caleb Teeters and Lowell Birdsong finished 135th with 1.91 pounds and Jake Haggerton and Kaleb Brown finished 151st, after accepting a 1 pound penalty to bring their weight to 0.96 pounds. Jacob and Josh Lee were unable to weigh and finished tied at 162nd place.

Alba-Golden

The Alba-Golden Panthers fielded the most teams with nine and placed two of them in the top 100. Shawn Davis and Frederick Arenas finished 79 with 5.31 pounds and Austin Hartley and Chris Chabaud finished 96 with 4.08 pounds.

Ross Michaels and Isaac Pickering had 3.61 pounds for a 106th place finish and Joe Darden and Mason Silcox finished 114th with 2.94 pounds. Jacob Hass and David Sowell had 1.49 pounds and finished in 142nd place. Mason Ragsdale and Dylan Arenas finished 152nd place with 0.84 pounds.

Adrian Browning and Dakota Reeves, Talon Howard and Cody Graves, and Braden Reynolds and Riley Sandoval ended the day tied for 162nd place after finishing with no weight.

Yantis

Dallas Scott and Joshua Moreland were the top finishers for the Yantis Owls with a 143rd place finish and 1.45 pounds after a 1 pound penalty. Will Graham and Mason Jones made the cut at 159th place with 0.43 pounds

Kaiden Bush and Sydney Williams, along with Amanda Hendricks and Madison Jones, finished tied for 162nd place with no weight measured.

Angler Team of the Year

The current Angler Team of the Year standings have been released and the list includes 11 teams from the local area. The cutoff is the top 50 percent of all 232 teams competing. These teams will move on to regionals, which will include teams from the Houston Division, on April 15 at Sam Rayburn Reservoir. With two tournaments remaining before regionals, there is plenty of time for the standings to change.

Mineola currently has four teams in the standings, Dalton Hendrix and Connor Dobbs at 46th, River Simonek and Tristan Rychlik at 53rd, Bailey Mischnick and Dalton Robles at 59th and Jake Haggerton and Kaleb Brown at 96th.

Quitman has three teams currently qualified with Dawson Hudman and Ben Burroughs leading the Bulldogs in 22nd place. Langdon Bautista and Layton Brown are tied at 33rd and JC Brisindine and Neely Duncan are 51st place.

Alba-Golden also had three teams including the 25th place team Shawn Davis and Frederick Arenas. Mason Ragsdale and Dylan Arenas are 66th place and Ross Michaels and Isaac Pickering are 105th.

Yantis has one team qualified in Dallas Scott and Joshua Moreland at 60th place.

The THSBA will now take a two-month break during December and January before resuming Feb. 18 at Lake Tawakon.
