Backer seeks re-election to QISD school board

Posted

Former QISD teacher and current school board Vice President Corey Backer seeks one of the two open seats on the Quitman School Board of Trustees.

Backer, who taught at Quitman High School from 2004 to 2009 and is now employed by Tyler ISD as an Educational Diagnostician, said his educational background and personal QISD experience, as both a teacher and board member, allow him to lend a uniquely qualified voice to the Board.

“Six years ago my sole purpose for running was to bring an educator’s practical, common sense perspective to the board. I hope that the people of Quitman will choose to allow me to continue to work on their behalf. No matter how this election turns out, though, I remain honored and humbled with the trust they have shown me over these last two terms.”

Backer attends the First United Methodist Church of Quitman and is a member of Flora Masonic Lodge. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M-Commerce and a Master of Education degree from The University of Texas at Tyler. A graduate of Alba- Golden, Backer is also a veteran of the United States Army having served as an Airborne Infantryman. He is married to long time Quitman resident Lauren Backer, a QHS graduate who has lived in the area since moving here with her parents Randy and Teresa Dunn in the mid 1980’s.Together they have twin daughters, Phoebe and Fiona.

“With my daughters about to enter school”, says Backer, “I will be actively engaged in the district for the next decade. I feel we are all called to contribute and play our role in the success of the community, and I feel that due to my education and work experience, this is an area of expertise I have to offer. Our school has undergone a myriad of changes in the six years since I was first elected, but after a lot of hard work I think we have arrived at a place in which the community can be justifiably proud. The recent passage of the bond and TRE are indicative of a community and board that are working well together, and I would be honored to continue this work. I respectfully ask for your vote, and if I am fortunate enough to be re-elected it will be my great privilege to once again lend my education, energy, and experience to meeting the needs of the district as a whole.”
