Mineola council OKs subdivision plat
The preliminary plat for Blackmon Meadows, a new subdivision in Mineola, met approval from the city council Monday.
The housing development is off FM 1254 just south of the Mineola Youth Foundation ballfields. It is being platted for 33 single-family homes.
Fire Marshal David Madsen said dirt work has already begun at the site.
The council accepted the high bid of $12,001 for a lot at Hogg and Buchanan Streets from Jeff Sandifer.
City Manager Mercy Rushing said the lot formerly housed a water tower, and a plan to have a city park there fell through.
In her briefing, Rushing reviewed the Mineola Economic Development board’s plans to pursue a possible partnership with Peoples Communications to bring high speed internet infrastructure into the city.
She reviewed a community meeting held Friday, July 17 to go over concerns and suggestions primarily from residents of the south side neighborhood.
She described the meeting as productive with many good ideas given, several of which she and city staff will be working on.
Councilman Mitchell Tuck, who attended, stressed the need to make sure information about city operations gets out to the community, and working on more diverse hiring practices.
Rushing also discussed the recent project to remove the dividing fence between the two Mineola cemeteries, including lots of positive publicity for the community, some of which was international.
During a workshop follow up, Rushing suggested the council participate in a public service announcement encouraging the wearing of face masks. A photo shoot was tentatively set for Wednesday.
