Mineola FFA excels at leadership development

Mineola FFA Members have been competing around the state over the last few weeks in a variety of contests intended to improve speaking, leadership and critical thinking abilities.

Teams competing at the Van Invitational Leadership Development contest on Nov. 5 earned top spots including the following places:

1st Place Senior Chapter Conducting, team members: Lin Dong, Antonio Ventura, Cam Ramos, Armando Veloz, Makayla Mitchell, Brianna Bethel, Jackson Vandover.

1st Place Public Relations: Sydney Johnson, Riley Johnson, Abby Kratzmeyer, Antonio Ventura.

1st Place Radio Broadcasting: Emily Jones, Autumn Wade, Jonah Fisher.

2nd Place Junior Chapter Conducting: Riley Donohoe, Olivia Toledo, Adrian French, Lanie Yager, Kaylie Roberts, Emily Melvin, Michelle Hernandez.

2nd Place Job Interview: Jonah Fisher.

2nd Place Senior Skills Demonstration: Alex Evans, Danny Lockhead, Emily Andrews.

2nd Place Senior Creed Speaking: Kensie Shaft.

These teams are trained outside of school time and require dozens of hours of extracurricular work. The Senior Chapter Conducting team and Junior Quiz team are both advancing to the Area VI Contest on Nov. 14.

The program has benefited tremendously from a jump in enrollment in agricultural science classes from a total of 104 in the 2017-2018 school year to 202 this year. That total makes Mineola FFA the largest FFA chapter in Wood County.
