Mineola Lady Jackets fall to Mt. Vernon, 8-4

Sophomore Mycah Morman got the start for the Lady Jackets last Tuesday against the visiting Mt. Vernon Lady Tigers. Mt. Vernon went home with an 8-4 softball win.

If one looked at the scoreline, it may appear that Morman got shelled – far from it. Morman made the Lady Tigers put the ball in play on the ground 20 times.

Of the 13 Mt. Vernon base hits, seven were infield hits. Mix in four infield errors and the scoreline becomes deceptive.

Morman gave up four solid base hits on the night. The remainder of the base hits surrendered either found a gap through the infield, were fielding miscues or were ground balls that were simply beaten to first by the Lady Tigers.

The young hurler largely kept a good hitting Lady Tiger team off balance, giving the Lady Jackets a chance to steal a win.

Mt. Vernon managed to load the bases in the first on a clean single, an infield single and a Texas-leaguer. Mineola gifted them a run on a throwing error.

The Lady Jackets tied the score in the bottom half. Jadelyn Marshall was hit by a pitch. Clean-up batter Jaycee Smith stepped in and drilled a stand-up double to left-centerfield. Marshall easily scored from first on the play.

Mt. Vernon chalked up two runs in the second on two Mineola errors and an infield hit. They added two runs in the fourth, two in the sixth and a single run in the seventh. Infield base hits played prominently in each of those rallies.

The Mineola bats were not quiet on the night. The Lady Jackets compiled eight base hits. Caroline Castleberry, Gracie Finley, Allie Hooten, Jaycee Smith, Gracie Lindley, Jocelyn Whitehead and Jorja Young each tallied a base hit. Castleberry went 2 for 4.

Mt. Vernon swapped a run for an out in the sixth and likewise two runs for two outs in the seventh.

The Lady Jackets are in the playoff mix battling with Harmony for the third spot in district, while Mt. Vernon is chasing a Winnsboro softball team which is undefeated in district.

The Lady Jackets have two home games remaining on the schedule: Tuesday, April 11 vs. Winona and Tuesday, April 18 vs. Winnsboro.
