While both teams came in to the game on win streaks it was the home team who proved to be too tough inside Friday night as Mineola beat Alba-Golden 53-34.
From the outset it seemed that Mineola’s offensive game plan was to work the ball inside for easy looks then when a double team comes, pass the ball back outside to open shooters.
Mineola grabbed an early 15-6 and then Cameron Sorenson gave Mineola its first double-digit lead of the night as he hit his first three pointer. On the ensuing play Shaw Franklin got a steal and lay up to go as Mineola led 20-6 with just under six minutes left in the second quarter.
Alba-Golden responded later in the quarter as they went on an 8-2 run to end the half as Mineola would lead 22-14. During the 8-2 run Dyllon Shuttlesworth and Sean Davis would score for AG.
In the second half AG continued using their 1-3-1 defense as they tried to limit Mineola’s side looks. Mineola then began to hit shots from outside. Both Davion Sneed and Franklin hit outside shots during the quarter for Mineola.
As the quarter began to close Mineola began to get the ball in to the paint again as Sneed hit another layup, Kadavion George finished a great dish from Sorenson, and Sean Dennis got a baseline hook shot to fall.
Alba-Golden also hit a few shots during the same span as Shuttlesworth banked in an elbow jump shot and Mike Hartin hit a three. Shuttlesworth then converted on a layup that cut Mineola’s lead to 12 with less than two minutes left in the frame. The quarter would end with Mineola leading 35-23.
In the fourth quarter Mineola repeatedly got offensive rebounds leading to easy shots and kept AG at bay for the final eight minutes.
Mineola would go on to win by 19. Franklin led Mineola with 14 points, eight rebound and three steals. Dennis added eight points and five rebounds. Sorenson had seven points and three assists. George finished with six points and Davion Sneed added eight off the bench. No stats were available for AG before press time.
