Summer break has arrived. The library had a wonderful turn out on June 8 for the first day of the Summer Reading Program. Tweens and Teens hosted 16 participants and the kindergarten to fifth grade group had 22 participants. Each Wednesday in June will have activities for the children at 2 p.m.
Thursday saw the 345 Summer Reading Program begin with eight children participating and this group will continue to meet at 2 p.m. on Thursdays only in the month of June.
It is so very important to keep children reading over the summer. Reading for just 20 minutes a day three times a week keeps reading skill levels up. Let your children read for fun and see what interests them. Their book selections may not make your top 10 list; but, as long as they are reading and the material meets your home guidelines, let them read.
The bookmobile made its annual appearance at summer school with the primary students on Tuesday and the elementary students on Thursday. Each grade was presented a program and an opportunity to check out books. This visit will continue for the three weeks of summer school.
We love the increased visits by the children to the Mineola Memorial Library. We remind parents they are responsible for their children and the behavior of their children at all times in the library.
Heads up for a fun program on Thursday, July 13 when the Trailblazer Trailer will visit Mineola from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is an interactive, hands-on Science exhibit for children; especially those in third to eighth grade. Stay tuned for more details as it gets closer.
Have you explored our TexShare Databases? Do you know what those are? The TexShare Databases are on-line resources provided free of charge to our patrons. There is a section for Do-It-Yourself Home Improvement and Hobbies and Crafts. There is pronunciator where you can learn a new language. There is Learning Express where you can work on your GED test preparation; get ahead on other school subjects; and work on your job skills. If you have an active library card, visit our website and log into the card catalog then click on the TexShare icon and explore.
Some people have asked why we do not carry all of the books in a particular series. Sometimes it is because books have gone missing; sometimes it is because replacement is next to impossible and sometimes it is because a number of books in the series just did not circulate so they were removed to make room for other selections. There is only so much space in the library and difficult decisions have to be made as to what to keep and what to let go. Just thought you might be curious.
The Library received a donation from the Twentieth Century Club honoring Kathy Lewis for her service as president of the organization.
