Mineola Memorial Library Notes
Summer reading programs have ended for this year. We offered 56 programs and those were attended by 600 children and their parents. We offered a variety of programs from art, to science, to reading, to games, to walking field trips. We had programs at the library, the Mineola Primary Summer School, the Mineola Elementary Summer School, and Addie McFarland Community Center. To all the sites that allowed us to visit – thank you! To all of our participants—thank you!
Our goal for the summer reading programs is always to promote reading as well as to invite people into the library to see what we have to offer. There are books, audio books (recorded books), movies, and non-fiction materials, such as books on dinosaurs, and cooking – but not necessarily books about cooking dinosaurs. We have computer stations for patrons to use, children’s computers full of games, and a cool place to go.
The library also hosted Money Camp for children ages 5 to 10 years old. One enthusiastic teacher taught the children about savings and spending, needs versus wants, and setting goals. You may have seen a write-up about this in last week’s paper. This program was brought by A Circle of Ten Inc. and sponsored by City National Bank, CapitalOne, and Southside Bank.
A big thank you to the volunteers who helped make these programs possible. We couldn’t do what we do without your assistance. Another big thank you to the volunteers who helped in the library while I went on vacation. Knowing there were plenty of people available to help the staff helped me enjoy my time off. Knowing an excellent staff is in place was what really made it possible for me to take the time off.
August will be a quiet month. No programming. This is the time for our annual inventory and for the staff to make plans for the fall programs which will begin in September. Many old favorites will return, and there may be some new ones to try. Please, don’t ask about them yet. The information will be forthcoming nearer to the end of the month.
Stop by the library and see what is new. We are located at 301 N. Pacific on the corner of N. Pacific and Blair streets. We are on the west side of the road.
There is a display to help you choose a book based not on the cover but on a quote from the book. No peeking! Look for these books near adult mysteries (how appropriate, mysterious books near the mystery genre).
In the children’s area is a world map with books of stories from around the world and books or about different parts of the world. Check those out and take a vacation to another place using your imagination.
Remember, the Mineola Memorial Library is a 501(c)3, non-profit and your donations are tax deductible.
