Many of you have already heard our sad news. Our library cat, Chessie, passed away on Friday, Aug. 3. She was a part of our library from the summer of 2009 until this year. She was 9 ½ years old. She spent most of her days acting as a paperweight for my important documents, and her nights investigating sounds throughout the library and patrolling the windows. We will miss her and we will not replace her.

On a happier note, we have received notice that we are again an accredited library with the Texas State Library. This means we can participate in the Inter Library Loan Program and the Tex Share Databases among other things. We are very happy our library met all the criteria necessary to receive this accreditation.

We would also like to congratulate Eagle Scout Samuel Hurley. His project was repainting the porches at the library and repainting the book/movie drops and adding a bench. This facelift made a difference to the appearance of the library and we would like to thank him for choosing the library for his project.

We are progressing through our inventory very nicely. We are about two-thirds of the way through and this year; we are finding what we expect to find on the shelves. Some years items were missing and never located, but this year is a good year.

We have a lot of programs planned for this fall. Times will be adjusted to reflect the new times of the school day in Mineola. I have a couple of fun programs on the burner for coding and puzzling. Stay tuned.

East Texas Library Friends are now reading Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann and will meet in Mineola to discuss the book on Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. This is a non-fiction book about the Osage murders and the birth of the FBI. Should be an interesting read.

This time of year we receive donations from people as their children leave for college or closets are cleaned out. Please remember, we do not accept magazines or encyclopedias or text books. We do accept books in good condition. With books, think of it this way: If you would not handle the book or have it in your home due to its condition, please do not do anything but put the item in the trash.

The Mineola Memorial Library has received memorials for Barbara Peacock from Angela Dickey, and for Chessie by Vivian Cox.
