Mineola Memorial Library Notes

February is just flying by. Like the groundhog predicted, spring is not that far away. Now might be the time to look at gardening books and find inspiration.

Many, many thanks to City National Bank (CNB) in Mineola for hosting a bake sale to benefit the Mineola Memorial Library. Thanks to many bakers and many buyers, CNB was able to make a generous donation to the library. We so appreciate the bank for thinking of the library and having this fundraiser.

We have just added a new program for children ages five and younger with their parents. It’s called Free Play Friday. It happens on Fridays at 10 a.m. Children are encouraged to play and parents to play with them or spend some time talking with other parents. It lasts about an hour. Several play centers are set up and children can play house, push cars, do art work, or put their imaginations to work.

What does play have to do with reading? It stirs the imagination. It experiences cause and effect. There is sequencing (think of the last time you built a block tower). A variety of motor skills are used to manipulate play items. Social skills are learned in sharing and waiting your turn. Communication skills are developed when playing with other children and explaining what is going on. All of these skills work together preparing a child for learning and reading.

The Library Book Club will meet on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. to discuss “The Typewriter’s Tale” by Michiel Heyns. Join us for what will be an interesting discussion about this book. After the discussion, the next book selection will be revealed.

East Texas Library Friends will meet in Rains County on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. to discuss “The Gods of Howl Mountain” by Taylor Brown. This book club is made up of readers from all over East Texas and meets about every six weeks to discuss a book. Find them online at             www.goodreads.com and search for the group: East Texas Library Friends.

We do have some non-partisan Voters Guides available for patrons to look at with regard to the March 3 election. Pick up a copy if you are interested in more information.

Mineola Memorial Library is a 501(c)3, non-profit and your donations are tax-deductible.
