Mineola Memorial Library Notes
Summer is winding down. School for Mineola is about to resume and already some groups like football, band and volleyball are getting prepared for their seasons. There is still time to enjoy books and live vicariously through the characters.
We have several books about the Olympics both factual and fiction. I just finished reading “The Boys in the Boat” about the 1936 rowing team. It gave me an appreciation for the preparations and strategies used in this one competition. Stop by and find a book that piques your interest and check out Miss Pam’s medal count.
Another good book, not related to the Olympics, is “The Personal Librarian” by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray. This is historical fiction based on the life of Belle da Costa Greene and her success as a woman during the early part of the last century and the choices she had to make being a person of color.
August is typically a quiet month for the library. It is a time for staff to catch their breath and make plans for the fall and winter. We are watching the numbers, keeping up with CDC recommendations and trusting our instincts. We hope to re-start in-person programming in September. Stay tuned for program descriptions and schedules. This means we probably will not have any Grab and Go’s on the porch in August (but keep an eye on our Facebook page because we could surprise you).
We’d still like to know your thoughts about bringing GED classes back to Mineola. Please, take a minute to call the library at 903-569-2767 and let us know if you would like to have GED classes in Mineola, if you are eligible would you attend, and if you would like to volunteer to help with GED.
The Mineola Memorial Library is a 501©3, non-profit and your donations may be tax-deductible.
The library has received an anonymous donation and a donation in memory of Vivian Cox.
