Summer Reading program is halfway over. We’ve had lots of fun on Wednesday afternoons at 2 p.m. coloring fish, turning in reading logs and participating in two additional activities. Children get up to 20 minutes at each station before heading over to check out books or leaving for other destinations. Stop by and see how our schools of fish are growing.

We had a special guest on Tuesday, June 28. Dr. Jim Pennington of Texas A&M presented the Chemistry Road show to about 40 children and adults. This program is made possible through the Texas A&M Chemistry Department, the Texas A&M Outreach, Shell Oil Company and Dow Chemical Company. The children learned about different kinds of science and the cool things you could do by applying that knowledge. The program was about 90 minutes and non-stop. Thank you Mineola ISD for allowing us the use of the elementary school gym for the program. Thank you to our adult volunteers Martha and Emily for helping Pam and I with the final experiment with balloons. That was an explosive activity.

Summer Reading continues through July 21. Each Wednesday, you may turn in your reading logs and receive a reward as well as participate in three activities.

The last week of Summer Reading will be quite eventful. We’ll have the TAME museum on wheels, our last Wednesday gathering, and our final wrap-up with a storyteller and rewards on Thursday.

On Monday, July 18 from 8 a.m. until noon on the First United Methodist Church parking lot on the corner of N. Johnson and McDonald will be the Trailblazer TAME museum on wheels presenting several different stations of interest including aerodynamics, biotechnology, energy, weather, and space. You’ll have to stop by and see what is in the museum this visit.

Wednesday July 20 at 2 p.m. will be our last set of activities in the library. Don’t forget to come by and add to our schools of fish and try out two different activities.

Thursday, July 21 at 2 p.m, we will have Elizabeth Ellis tell some tales to us as we wrap up our Summer Reading events. She comes to us courtesy of a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts.

Our Summer Reading events would not be possible without our wonderful participants and those who contribute to the program including CNB, Dairy Queen, Cowburners, Whataburger, private citizens and many others.

Mineola Memorial Library is a 501(c)3, non-profit and your donations may be tax-deductible. We received donations toward our computer upgrade from two anonymous donors.
