Mineola plans 150th birthday
Plans to celebrate Mineola’s 150th anniversary as a city are underway.
A group of citizens began mulling ideas last week to keep the party going throughout the year 2023.
They will meet monthly to firm up those plans, with the goal of kicking off the celebration in December with a city council proclamation and perhaps a New Year’s event to welcome in 2023.
The official date of the city’s incorporation is May 23, 1873, and some of the events may be centered around that date, as they were 50 years ago.
City Manager Mercy Rushing said one of the goals is to enhance events that are already taking place by adding a sesquicentennial flavor, such as the May Fiesta and Iron Horse Festival and the annual parades (homecoming, veterans and Christmas).
Sesquicentennial-themed downtown banners, merchandise and contests are planned, and sponsors are being sought to help promote events throughout the year.
A time capsule from 25 years ago at Mineola High School will be opened, and the 2023 seniors will then place another one to be opened in 2048.
A fall concert and fireworks show at the Nature Preserve are in the works, along with a gala event at the civic center in December.
Other ideas include pageants and an official logo.
