Mineola police, community join to fight crime

Mineola neighbors and the police department will join forces for a citywide awareness campaign against crime Tuesday, Oct. 8.

The event allows the police to visit with citizens in a more relaxed environment, said Capt. Dusty Cook, who is coordinating the event.

“We speak with folks we don’t always get to see,” he said.

Citizens can share their concerns with police that the department can take back and work on, he said.

“We get a lot of good out of it all the way around,” he said.

It will mark the 19th year for the city to take part in such an effort.

In addition to the PD, the fire department, sheriff’s and constables offices also participate.

Texans Against Crime aims to create safer neighborhoods through neighborhood communication, community involvement and crime prevention.

Officers from the Mineola Police Dept. will schedule time to visit with residents at each TAC neighborhood celebration. Churches are among those who have held events in the past and have been invited to do so again.

The police will be handing out crime prevention information and will have stickers for the kids.

Locations for neighborhood celebrations should be reported to the police department by Monday, Oct. 7 in order for the police to schedule visits to the events.

If any events will be blocking city streets, prior approval is needed from the police chief, and barricades can be made available. Call Capt. Cook at 903-569-6294.

Cook can also offer ideas for celebrations.
