Mineola running game too much for Bonham as Jackets roll up 55 points for homecoming

Watch enough Texas high school football and one will see some unique things.

The large crowd at Meredith Memorial Stadium was witness to one of those unique sequences in the first half of Mineola 55-23 win over the Bonham Purple Warriors.

On five consecutive possessions, the Yellowjackets scored a touchdown in one play.

Yellowjackets Trevion Sneed and Dawson Pendergrass alternated scores. Sneed through the right side for 28 yards following a fumble recovery, Pendergrass through the left side for 16 yards after his own punt return, Sneed left for 53 yards, Pendergrass for 27 yards (again after his punt return) and Sneed for 53 yards.

It was nothing fancy. In each case, the line cracked the Bonham defense allowing Sneed and Pendergrass to choose the seam in the Bonham secondary to exploit. The runners feasted on the Warriors defense.

Mineola scored on their sixth straight possession of the first half, but the last score took two plays. At the half the score stood 41-7.

After being shut down by an aggressive Yellowjacket defense for most of the half, Bonham scored on a 10-play, 64-yard drive with 56 seconds remaining in the half.

Bonham scored three times in the second half (two touchdowns and a field goal).

The Yellowjackets recorded two touchdowns in the second stanza. Sneed scored from 3-yards out after a 27-yard carry up the middle, and Pendergrass sped around the defense for an 80-yard scoring run.

The game was not evenly matched. However, the Jackets were exposed to a quarterback who put the ball to his receivers with pace. That exposure will certainly prepare them well for more multi-talented offenses in the coming weeks.

The Jacket defense had a stellar game.

Junior Nate Griffin played an outstanding game inside. Jaxon Holland made a crushing tackle on the first Bonham series which set the tempo for the Jacket defense.

Also of note was the work at quarterback by senior Thomas Hooton and the excellent punt return production by Pendergrass.

Mineola will face a much more difficult challenge Friday in Mount Vernon, like Mineola unbeaten on the season.
