The Mineola School board reviewed 14 applications for interim school superintendent for about 45 minutes in closed session Thursday, Sept. 12.

Dr. Kim Tunnell resigned after four years with the district on Aug. 22. She will remain with the district through January as a special assistant unless she finds other employment. That resignation was accepted on a 5-1 vote, along with a separation agreement.

Several parents and teachers spoke fondly of Tunnell as they waited in the lobby Thursday. The prevailing concern was fear of the unknown, of losing advancements made under Tunnell and the CTE (career and technical education) program.

One parent, Darla Bethel, spoke to the board during a public forum, reminding them that the seniors who are upset about Tunnell’s resignation will be of voting age next year.

“We want answers,” said Bethel, “We want to know if you’re still going to be our champions?”

No comments or answers were given by the board members.

The board narrowed its search to three candidates and interviewed the first on Monday. Two more were scheduled to be interviewed on Tuesday.
