Mineola school board OKs using district fields for youth soccer association 2020 seasons

The Mineola Soccer Association has a new home.

The Mineola ISD board of trustees unanimously approved a facility use proposal prepared by Shelby Turner, Mineola High School Soccer coach, at the Monday night meeting.

The soccer association will have use of the field directly behind the Mineola Middle School during their spring and fall seasons beginning on Feb. 1.

The goal is to provide quality practice facilities for the Mineola High School soccer teams and community members, grow Mineola Soccer Association through the quality and availability of better playing surfaces, and offset the cost of field maintenance for the district.

The Mineola Soccer Association will have use of the fields and goals for practices and Saturday scheduled games. They will provide all equipment and maintain the playing surfaces, as well as compensate for weekly mowing in the form of $200 paid monthly in-season.

The soccer association will carry liability insurance through North Texas Soccer and US youth soccer, and work closely with MISD to schedule around school events. Saturday facility use, including the primary school gym restrooms, will be overseen by Mineola Soccer Association board members.

Mineola Primary and Middle Schools will have use of soccer association goals and nets year-round during recess and PE periods.

The soccer association has been using fields at the Mineola Civic Center but had sought an alternative after that usage had come into question. Recently the two groups had established guidelines to use the civic center fields for the spring with the understanding that more permanent facilities would be sought.

Among the requirements was to seek status as a 501(c)3 non-profit, something that won’t be needed to use the school district fields.
