Mineola schools take small steps to reopen
Mineola schools will be testing the waters with students returning to school campuses in small numbers next week.
The administrative leadership team met last Thursday to begin laying plans for the possible resumption of school in the fall.
The athletic department is completing plans to resume workouts for student athletes on Monday, June 8, under the guidelines established by the University Interscholastic League.
The district will also be holding summer school on a voluntary basis, also anticipated to start June 8.
And high school band practices will also resume with percussion and color guard.
“Our thoughts are if we can get some really solid plans for students returning to the building on a small scale that we might be able to transition this to our bigger plan in the fall when our students are allowed to return,” Superintendent Cody Mize said.
Those guidelines for athletic workouts include social distancing and capacity requirements, spread out drop off locations, daily health screenings, hand sanitizing stations, cleaning all equipment before and after each use and staggered start times.
Boys in grades 7-12 will workout from 8-10 a.m. Monday through Thursday and practice specific sport skills from 10:30-noon.
Girls in 7-12 will have sport-specific skill drills at 9 a.m. and workouts from 10-noon.
Fridays will be reserved for high school football and volleyball.
Boys will be at Meredith Memorial Stadium and girls at the high school gym.
Locker rooms and other indoors areas will be closed and closely monitored.
Participants must bring their own water, and water/drinks will not be shared.
