Mineola skateboard program begins second year
The Grind, an after-school skateboarding program for Mineola Middle School and High School students, is resuming this week.
The program began a year ago and had 31 students complete the program, which entitles them to keep their skateboard and safety equipment.
There are already 20 students signed up this year, almost double the number that started last year.
The equipment is furnished by donations from individuals and businesses. It costs about $100 to equip one student.
The skate club is a free club designed to reach interested youth, particularly at-risk youth, by meeting them in an area of common interest. Skaters will progress through The Grind Program to learn the fundamentals of skating and the classic go-to tricks like ollies, kickflips, and dropping in. The curriculum also highlights important life lessons that can be garnered from the sport.
The program is sponsored by the Flint and Steel Coalition, and programs can be arranged for groups wanting more information.
