Mineola too much for Malakoff

All facets of the Lady Jackets’ game were on point last Tuesday as Mineola defeated the visiting Malakoff Lady Tigers, 54-23.  A smothering press, excellent court awareness and beautiful ball movement highlighted the win.

There was no standing around in the Lady Jacket 2-3 zone defense. Despite giving up three inches in height per starter, the Lady Jackets sandwiched the much taller Malakoff players, denying them the ball all night.

In a new wrinkle, Mineola used a 3/4-press in the first half, which confused and plagued the visiting side. In the second half the Lady Jackets unleashed their full court press and created a multitude of turnovers which cemented the win.

Offensively, Coach Gibson’s squad ran like a top. The ball movement was spectacular to watch, and produced points at a steady rate.  The turnovers suffered by Mineola were largely due to making one too many passes, not too few.

The Lady Jackets ran up an 11-2 lead at the first quarter break. Five Lady Jackets scored in the first quarter. The Mineola dominance also prevailed on the boards. Tiara Stephens, who had 10 rebounds on the night, made her presence felt and hauled down four rebounds in early action.

While Sabria Dean was dishing out assists, the Lady Jackets played relaxed and made their open shots. Mineola recorded seven 3-pointers on the night.

Coming out for the second half with a 27-12 advantage, the Lady Jackets turned up the heat. Malakoff whistled a time out after falling behind by 23 points. What ensued on the Malakoff bench was a classic dressing down by the head coach to her team.

The intervention was to no avail, as the Lady Jackets simply continued their energized play. The Lady Jackets took a 42-19 lead into the fourth quarter and prevailed 54-23.

After three consecutive road wins (Nov 19 at John Tyler, Nov. 25 at Texas High and Nov. 26 at Mount Vernon) the Lady Jackets showcased their 2019-20 team last Tuesday. It was a precise effort played against a much-taller and very athletic Malakoff side. With the district opener only days away, the Lady Jackets are primed for a great year.
