Mineola’s Galaz qualifies for cross country state meet

While most cross country runners’ season will be coming to an end this week Mineola’s Carlos Galaz will continue his impressive run in the state meet Saturday at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock.

The Mineola Yellowjacket varsity cross country teams had a solid final showing of the regular season as they competed in a meet held at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie Oct. 23. Galaz and girls’ varsity runner Alyssa Lankford led their teams as both finished in the top 15.

Galaz finished 15th overall yesterday with a time of 17:37. While Lankford finished with her best time of the year 13:30, 28 seconds faster than her best time,  she missed qualifying for state by eight spots.

All of the Mineola runners ran personal best times of the year.  Devin Rojas finished 36th and David Amador finished 37th.  Both boys were just a few spots away from qualifying for state as well.  Galaz, Rojas and Amador were the only freshman in the top 50 out of 173 runners at the meet. Josh Lee finished 49th while Jose Garcia placed 116th and Scout Parker came in 155th.

“Our boys’ team did well and finished seventh overall out of 24 teams,” Head Coach David Smith said via email.

The high school athletics governing body - the University Interscholastic League - takes the top four teams from the Grand Prairie regional meet for the state finals. Mineola’s team came just three spots short of qualifying in the team category this season.
