Monitor brings home awards
The Wood County Monitor brought home a variety of awards from the 91st annual North and East Texas Press Association conference held last week in Sulphur Springs.
The Wood County Monitor was competing against other weeklies and with only editions from after the merging of the two local papers in August.
Among the Monitor’s awards were a third place in column writing by Larry Tucker. His columns entered were about attending the State Fair and reminiscing about an old teacher named Eula Mae. A third place was also claimed in news writing with stories entered about a veteran’s missing service dog and an Alba City Council meeting in August.
A fourth place in columns was won with Doris Newman’s columns on ice cream and caregiving and “dadgum” sweetgum trees. The Monitor also claimed fourth place awards in sports coverage from Oct. 26 and Dec. 21, fourth in feature photos with photos of children on a ride at the Old Settlers Reunion and of the auctioneer at the Golden Sweet Potato Festival.
The Monitor also received fourth place in General Excellence for Aug. 3 and Oct. 26 editions.
