Wood County Sheriff’s Department activities for the past week included:

Oct. 25 – Lieutenant Robert Holland and Deputy Kevin Atkinson were dispatched to Farm-to-Market Road 2225 following a 9-1-1 call by a woman who reported that her grandson had assaulted his sister. The woman said she witnessed the assault in which the young man hit his sister and shoved her down causing her to hit her head on the wall. The suspect was still at the scene and was taken into custody and transported to jail. Brandon Irving Nichols, 27, of Mineola was charged with assault causing bodily injury, family violence.

Oct. 24 – Deputy Melissa Pollard was dispatched to the home office of the Ultimate Kobe Beef Company on FM 312 in the Winnsboro area on a possible burglary. The complainant stated that a Black and Decker lawn blower was missing and approximately $250 worth of beef was taken from a freezer in the residence. Pollard noted there were no signs of forced entry but the locking mechanism on one door was sticking which did not allow it to be properly secured. The case has been forwarded to CID for follow up.

Oct. 23 – Deputy Josh Davis conducted a traffic stop in the area of FM 2869 and County Road 3920 in the Hawkins area after observing a Ford pickup with an expired registration. The driver was unable to provide a driver’s license or proof of insurance. A routine check of the driver showed him to have a prior drug-related arrest. Davis asked for, and received, consent to search the vehicle. A pipe, commonly used to smoke methamphetamine, was located as well as suspected methamphetamine wrapped in tin foil. Howard Ottis Killian, 49, of Hawkins was arrested and transported to jail. He is charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Oct. 22 – While on routine patrol in the Yantis area just after 2 a.m., Deputy Justin Bowring observed two white males being dropped off at the Yantis Food Mart. After witnessing the two walk to the side of the building, Bowring made contact with the two young men - one of whom was carrying a large backpack. A consensual search of the backpack was conducted and Jacob Davis, 18, of Yantis was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia and was transported to jail without incident.

Oct. 21 – Deputy Davis conducted a traffic stop on FM 14 in the Hawkins area after witnessing a pickup fail to maintain a single lane and noted the vehicle had defective equipment. During his contact with the driver, Davis observed the man to be nervous. A consensual search of the pickup was conducted during which suspected methamphetamine was located as well as drug paraphernalia. Michael Ray Westerfield, Jr., 34, of Winnsboro was arrested and transported to jail. He is charged with possession of a controlled substance. Information gained from Westerfield during the traffic stop led deputies to the location of two wanted subjects, both of whom had active felony warrants. Amanda Rene Allen, 34, and Walter Wayne Hall, 22, both of Hawkins were located at a residence nearby and taken into custody. Allen’s warrant was for bond forfeiture/failure to appear, possession of a controlled substance. Hall’s warrant was for bond forfeiture/failure to appear, evading arrest or detention with a vehicle.

Deputy Jeremy Ragsdale was dispatched to Lake Fork Boat Storage off Highway 154 in the Yantis area. The complainant stated that he had received a call from the owner of the business who informed him that his storage unit lock had been cut off. The complainant arrived at his unit to find two battery chargers and two Dewalt drills missing. Additionally, numerous items of fishing equipment were missing as well. The case has been forwarded to an investigator who will attempt to develop leads.

Oct. 19 – Atkinson was dispatched to Jarvis Christian College on a large-scale physical altercation. Atkinson spoke with a female student who stated she had been struck in the stomach when she attempted to break up a fight between two females. She identified the boyfriend of one of the fighting women as being the one who struck her. Atkinson spoke with the man and heard a different version of events. The man stated the woman had struck him on the side of the head while he was attempting to break up the fight and denied striking the woman in the stomach. The case has been forwarded to investigators who will determine if charges are warranted.
