No changes in UIL alignments locally

Wood County high schools found out what division they will be in next fall during football season. The University Interscholastic League (UIL) set those numbers Dec. 8. The numbers were set for all UIL activities, with football the only sport with divisions within the different classifications.

Enrollments range from Class 6A powerhouse Allen with 7,102 students to Valentine High School in far West Texas (Jeff Davis County) which has a high school total of nine students in Class A.

Mineola and Winnsboro will stay in Conference 3A Division I while Quitman will remain 3A Division II. Alba-Golden and Hawkins get to stay put in 2A Division I. Although Yantis does not play football, they will remain in Class 1A in all extracurricular activities.

Respective enrollments reported include Alba-Golden, 229; Hawkins, 215; Mineola 461, Quitman, 351, Winnsboro 479; and Yantis, 102.

Schools will learn exactly what district they will be placed in Feb. 3. In Quitman’s current district all seven schools will remain 3A Division II – Winona, West Rusk, Harmony, Troup, Arp and Grand Saline.

Quitman Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Shane Webber is happy with the numbers.

“We knew the number would go up a little bit, but we weren’t sure how much,” he said. “We are looking forward to finding out what new district, if any, we will be put in. We were kind of nervous, but we knew with the numbers coming in from throughout the state the cut-off should be moved up. We have some pre-district games set up, but we have to find out about our districts before we can actually set a schedule up.”

In Mineola’s current district, the Yellowjackets, Winnsboro, Pottsboro, Bonham, Commerce, Mt. Vernon and Rains will remain in 3A Division I while Howe drops to 3A Division II.

Mineola Athletic Director Luke Blackwell is concerned about teams moving divisions. “I think the thing we need to look at is how many teams are moving down from Class 4A D II. And with UIL there is no telling which way we will go when the districts are announced in February,” Blackwell said. “We could stay in the area we are at now or could move back east where we were before.”

The cut-off numbers in Class 3A for Division I (Mineola and Winnsboro) is 360 to 544 while Division II (Quitman) is 250 to 359. In Class 2A Division I (Alba-Golden and Hawkins) the numbers are 164.5 to 249 while Division II numbers are 105 to 165.4.
