Panthers pounded by Edgewood
Every baseball team that has ever played has gone through a catastrophic inning – when it is impossible to buy a strike, when the Texas Leaguer falls and the balls roll to the fence. That was the case for the Alba-Golden Panthers in a 22-1 loss to the Edgewood Bulldogs on Friday, March 22.
For Alba-Golden, the fateful inning was the top of the third. Three pitchers threw for the Panthers in the inning and the strike zone eluded all three. Once the bases were loaded, Edgewood would chase them in with a base hit (a double and six singles in the inning). The Bulldogs batted around twice in the top half and recorded 13 runs.
Edgewood had put up two runs in the first and two in the second. Each of their rallies came with two outs. They were hard-earned runs. Edgewood hit the ball with authority to start the game and took advantage of the expansive, sloping outfield at Alba-Golden’s ballpark.
Held in check by some nice fielding by the Panthers, especially a scoop at first base by Jacob Dailey, the Bulldogs were still in a dogfight going into the third. After “the inning” Alba-Golden clawed one run back in the bottom half, and one run in the fifth. Edgewood added four more runs in the fifth behind four singles.
It would be wrong to dismiss the game as simply a rout. Alba-Golden competed to the end and provided some nice highlights along the way, including a beautiful 6-4-3 double play.
The Panthers looked to rebound on Tuesday, March at Lone Oak and on Friday, March 29 at home against Rains.
