Panthers survive Wolfe City’s late rally, 42-38

The Alba-Golden Panthers were able to get a much needed win in their last preseason non-district game Thursday against Wolfe Cit,y winning 42-38.

However their solid play for three quarters was nearly for not as the Wolfe City Wolves were down 12 points midway through the fourth quarter and went on a 8-0 run in the final three minutes. The Panthers effectively gave the A-G crowds an early Christmas present.

The Panthers started off solid as Dyllon Shuttlesworth got the scoring started for A-G, by hitting a three from the top of the key. Shuttlesworth then finished a lay-up to pace the Panthers throughout the first quarter. Shuttlesworth finished with a team high 13 points.

The first quarter ended with A-G leading 14-11.

In the second quarter both teams switched from their traditional full-court presses to more half-court defense as neither team was shooting the ball well from the outside. However the Panthers had maybe their best quarter of the game as the team repeatedly drove the ball to the basket picking up fouls, free throws and easy lay-ups.

This strategy on offense led to the Panthers gaining themselves a 10-point lead by half time. In the second quarter Shawn Davis got the A-G defense going with steals that led to fast-break lay-up opportunities for A-G. Zane Smith got a tip-in off a Davis miss, and Jon Michael Chadwick got an and one layup to fall during an 8-0 run late in the second quarter as the Panthers took a 29-19 lead in to halftime.

In the third both teams essentially traded baskets most of the quarter with the Panthers keeping their 10-point lead. Smith would extend the Panther lead back to 12 with another lay-up before the Wolves made a huge comeback in the final minutes that nearly earned them a victory.

Chadwick rounded out the Panther’s double-digit scorers with 10 points off the bench. Smith added seven points while Mike Hartin contributed with five points.
