July in Mineola means Firemans’ Rodeo
Break out your Wranglers and pull up your boot straps as the 53rd Annual Mineola Fire Department Rodeo is taking place this week.
A summer tradition, this year's rodeo will be at the Mineola Fire Department Rodeo Grounds on Highway 69 on the north side of Mineola. The show takes place at 8 p.m. both evenings. Tickets are at gate $10 adults, $8 kids and if in advance $9 and $7.
Among the improvements this year is a brand new concession stand of which department members are quite proud. The components of the building were donated by Brian Steck of ETAS and the fire department constructed it. Chuck Harris donated his time and did the concrete work. Benham donated money to help fund the new structure and Tyndell Electric donated most of the electrical material for the building.
For the cowboys and cowgirls doing their best in the arena, there will be $850 added money per event. Events will include Barrel Racing, Tie-Down Roping, Team Roping, Break-Away Roping, Saddle Bronc, Bareback, Steer Wrestling and everybody's favorite, except maybe the cowboys', bull riding. A perennial favorite is the calf scramble for kids 12 and under and competition will be broken into two groups for younger and older children.
Five girls are competing for the title of queen by selling tickets and donations. The girls are Melena Elias, Sarah Craven, Courtney Villarreal, Jordyn Bussell and Luz Mata. Harlie Davlin will serve as rodeo princess.
