Playhouse sets next performance

The third production of the Lake Country Playhouse’s 2019 season opens Friday, Sept. 20, with “The Women of Lockerbie.”

Written in 2003 by Deborah Brevoort, it is set in Scotland following the  terrorist bombing of Pan Am flight 103 in December 1988. Some 243 passengers and 16 flight crew lost their lives in the explosion which scattered debris over 850 square miles of Lockerbie. On the ground, 21 houses were destroyed and an additional 11 people lost their lives.

“The Women of Lockerbie” follows two intertwined story lines: a couple from New Jersey roam the countryside searching for any sign of their son who was on the flight, and a group of women from Lockerbie who are determined to convert an act of hatred into an act of love by washing the clothes of the dead and returning them to the victim’s families, yet are being prevented from doing this by the United States government because the items are considered evidence.

Directed by Jeannette Peel, the play is a poetic drama about the triumph of love over hate.

Elizabeth Stricklin and Rodney Mize portray the American couple seeking their son. Playing the women of Lockerbie are Kimberly Martin-Ross, Kim Bond, Mandy Whitecotton and Candace Brooks. The State Department representative is played by Ronnie Patrick.

Performances are Sept. 20, 21, 22, 27, 28 and 29. Friday and Saturday curtain is 7:30 p.m. with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.. Admission is $12 for adults and $6 for students. The box office will open one hour prior to the performance. Reservations can be made by calling the box office at 903-569-2300.

All productions by Lake Country Playhouse are performed at the Historic Select Theater, 114 N. Johnson Street, in Mineola.
