Protect animals from fireworks

Posted

Every year pets suffer as a result of fireworks. This year the Mineola Fire Department will be hosting the firework show at the Mineola Civic Center at dusk on July 4th. Please remember the following because this could be a very stressful time for many pets of all different breeds.

• Close windows and door to stop pets for escaping and keep the noise to a minimum. Using sounds of TV or radio may also calm pets.

• Make sure your loved pets are wearing some form of easily readable identification (even if in the house) in case of emergency.

• Let your pet pace around, whine, meow and hide if they want to. Their just trying to find safety and should not be disturbed. Make a safe place using bed with your clothing to bring comfort.

• If necessary, use medication to calm your animal during the fireworks. Please consult your veterinarian for the right solution for you and your pet.

• Always remember microchipping your pets is best, so if they do run away they are quickly reunited back with you.

These tips also apply to our smaller and larger pets too such as rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, goats and horses. All animals need to be treated with special care when fireworks are being set off due to being easily frightened.
