Big top coming to town for Friday performances
The Mineola Fire Department will be honorary elephant bathers when they aid the Carson & Barnes Circus in washing their pachyderms Friday at 3 p.m.
That will be in preparation of circus performances Friday set for 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the civic center.
Tickets for Carson & Barnes “Circus Saurus” are available at the Mineola Civic Center. In advance they will be $12 for adults and $6 for children. On circus day the adult tickets will be $18 and children’s tickets will be $10.
Circus promoters say this is the world debut of “Circus Saurus” in which the big top is transformed into a time machine. Extinct giants of the past and the endangered Asian elephants of today will clash under the big top.
As far as the elephants, circus officials tell us that, just like humans, the Carson & Barnes Circus elephants take daily showers. However, they get to lie down and get scrubbed by their handlers using approximately 500 gallons of water and two gallons of soap – just for one elephant’s bath. Circus officials purchase a special soap for the pachyderms that is brought in from Missouri that is especially formulated for their skin.
