QISD says no extracurricular for virtual learners

Quitman ISD held its first school board meeting in the new administration building on Winnsboro Highway Monday evening.

The board unanimously passed a resolution regarding extracurricular activities for the upcoming school year. Students and their families are given two options for starting school, one is in the daily regular classroom setting and the other is to stay at home and go to school online.

The QISD resolution allows for students who choose to be at school for in-person instruction to be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities. However, if a student opts for staying home and remote learning, they will not be allowed to participate in those activities which range from sports to band, UIL competitions and certain elective courses.

“If we were in a large district it might be possible to accommodate everyone being eligible, but in our small district it is just not feasible,” Superintendent Rhonda Turner said.  Turner cited as examples classes such as ag mechanics and geometry in construction where a student must be in attendance on campus. Turner said they could come back to this decision and make changes.

There had been no direction from the UIL concerning fall sports as of Monday night.

The board approved a $2,000 donation from the Quitman-Lake Fork Kiwanis Club. Turner reported a current enrollment of 1,157 students with 180 employees in the district.

Turner said plans for the employee day care center are proceeding and they have 14 signed up with two more expected during the school year. It is hoped the program will also allow students interested in early child care to get experience as they continue to develop the program.

The board passed a resolution accepting a bid of $2,000 for the sale of property to get it back on the tax rolls. The property is located in the West Quitman Addition off of Smith St.

Carol Taylor and Angie Luman of the Wood County Tax Office were designated to calculate the no-new revenue tax rate and the voter approval tax rate in accordance with the Texas Tax Code.

The board approved the inter-local service agreement with Region VII and added Sourcewell as a vendor.

Handbooks for each campus, employees, athletics and the student code of conduct were briefly reviewed and discussed. Board members will look at the handbooks and approve them at the August board meeting.

School is still set to begin Aug. 17.
