“Faye” Payne released on bond last week
Jewel “Faye” Payne, charged with attempted tampering of a witness, was released on bond from the Wood County Jail Thursday.
The 73-year-old Payne was arrested Oct. 6 and is the mother of Jason Payne who is serving a life sentence for the murder of his wife, Nicole, and her son.
The sheriff’s department arrested Mrs. Payne in Logansport, Louisiana after learning she had asked a niece to try to get a man to intimidate an emergency medical technician who had responded to the murder scene and who had testified in the trial. She had encouraged the niece to look into the EMT and find out if she had “a child or someone you could threaten to harm.”
After her arrest bond was set at $250,000 but Thursday she was released on a personal recognizance bond on a decision by the district judge.
The 402nd Judicial District Judge Tim Boswell explained that he weighs certain things when considering a bond. Those are the person’s potential as a flight risk, as well as their probability of committing another crime. He said he did not believe her to be a flight risk and he said that she has been warned to stay away from any witnesses in the trial. He also noted this was her first time to have gotten in trouble.
