QISD, UT-Tyler join forces

Quitman ISD recently entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with UT Tyler that will offer post-graduate opportunities for Quitman ISD employees. Master’s degree programs will be offered in the areas of curriculum and instruction, educational leadership, reading, school counseling, and special education. These programs will combine online coursework and any field supervision required for the degree.

QISD will offer a payroll deduction option for admitted students to cover tuition and fees incurred while taking classes. UT Tyler will bill the district at the end of each semester for tuition and fees. UT Tyler has also agreed that there will be no increase in tuition and fees totaling over 5% each year. UT Tyler’s College of Education & Psychology has agreed to pay the admission fee for QISD employees in the reading program.

The establishment of the MOU offers QISD employees a unique opportunity to further their education. Per Dr. Wesley Hickey, dean of the College of Education and Psychology, the MOU “provides unique pathways to pay for a master’s degree; therefore, individuals who have been wanting to advance their career, or improve their craft, are more likely to enroll. Districts often have a number of teachers and other personnel who have always wanted to have an advanced degree. This provides an avenue for it to happen.”

Superintendent Rhonda Turner added, "This is a meaningful partnership with UT Tyler and will provide opportunities for our faculty to continue to grow professionally and personally. Anytime we can offer a pathway to grow our own employees, our students benefit and our entire community benefits.”

Classes for admitted QISD employees will begin this summer.
