A-G ISD renews all teachers

Posted

After an approximately one hour behind closed doors in last Monday’s regular February meeting, the Alba-Golden School Board returned to take action in open meeting. It was a good news, bad news kind of situation with all teachers, both probationary and term, being renewed. It also included the acceptance of the resignation of the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Ron Callahan.

Superintendent Dwayne Ellis said that all motions were unanimous and there were not any nonrenewals when it came to the teaching staff. However, he regretted that Callahan had submitted his resignation “at least from this part of the education field.” He said that Callahan is considering going into coaching on the regional college level.

“I’m not happy with it,” Ellis said, calling Callahan “the finest class-act I’ve ever known.” Callahan’s resignation is effective June 30, completing his second year at A-G.

Also in last Monday’s meeting the school board, accepted Jackson Construction as the construction manager at risk on the remodeling of the school kitchen. Ellis said that the district’s goal with the updated kitchen is to enable culinary arts students to graduate with a certification ready to go to work in the field.

Also in the meeting the board approved cancelling the May 6 election since there is no opposition for any of the seats. Jason Stovall is the only incumbent seeking reelection. Ed Teel and Joey Hooton are retiring from the board and Johnny Teel and Jackie Staley will be moving on to the board.

Also in the February meeting the Alba-Golden School Board:

*renewed their audit contract with Rutherford Taylor and company who the district has used for about the past 20 years;

*Honored the Lady Panther varsity basketball team who fought their way to the regional semi-finals level this year;

*announced second grader Payzlee Fitzgerald as the elementary school Student of the Month;

*okayed an annual resolution stating the district won’t tax aircraft, recreational or personal vehicles in Wood and Rains Counties;

*heard there is no opposition for Region VII educational service center positions currently held by David Seago, for Place 1, and Hugh Mixon for place 6 and acknowledged they would not cast a vote;

*received a Texas Association of School Boards update that is intended to streamline policies and

*heard that the district’s enrollment is at 879 students, which is down 10 from the previous month. Ellis said, “It’s a revolving door. Kids don’t stay one place very long.”

All board members were present for the meeting.
