Deputy Terri Altman was dispatched to a residence on Lantern Lane at Holly Lake Ranch in response to 911 call in which the operator heard a woman scream before the call abruptly disconnected. After arriving on scene and making contact with the 911 caller, Altman learned the woman had been assaulted by her baby’s father following an argument over finances. The woman stated she exited the house because she was in fear of the man but he followed her outside and struck her in several locations over her body with a stick. The woman also stated she called 911 for help but the man grabbed the phone from her and left a short time later. A man, who was in the area working, heard the disturbance and called Holly Lake Security for help. The woman refused medical attention. Altman arranged a ride for the woman to Longview where she has family members. This case has been forwarded and assigned to an investigator for warrant consideration.

Sgt. Robert Holland was dispatched to a residence on CR 3540 in reference to a report of criminal mischief. The complainant stated she had come to the residence to drop off her two children for a visit with their father and while she was there her estranged common law husband became angry over her having a new boyfriend and struck her vehicle with a baseball bat. Sgt. Holland was able to observe a large dent in the right quarter panel of the woman’s vehicle consistent with her story. Holland spoke with the suspect’s father who stated he witnessed his son strike the vehicle. Holland was also able to speak to the suspect himself who readily admitted to striking the vehicle but stated he was in fear for his life because the woman was blocking his way into the residence. Sgt. Holland forwarded pictures of the damaged vehicle to investigators who are waiting for a repair estimate. At the victim’s request, this case will be presented for prosecution.

Deputy Steven Fields and Sgt. Brad Cates responded to an address on CR 2260 in response to a possible disturbance. A male complainant reported that a man had pulled a knife on him after his request to use the complainant’s phone was denied. The suspect reportedly made an ethnic slur and left walking along the county road after he was put out of an SUV occupied by two females. Fields made contact with the suspect who denied having a confrontation with the complainant. Daniel Eugene Nabors, 20, of Grand Saline was arrested after he was found to be in possession of prescription pain pills. He was transported to jail and charged with possession of a dangerous drug. The complainant requested Nabors be issued a criminal trespass warning for his property but declined to pursue further charges once he learned Nabors was being arrested for the pill possession.

Deputy Dustin Fenlaw was dispatched to a structure fire on FM 2869 just before midnight. Fenlaw arrived to find the trailer fully engulfed in flames with a separate fire that appeared intentionally set approximately 40 feet from the trailer fire. The property owner advised he had been having some drinks with friends around a bonfire before going to bed at around 10:30 pm. The man went on to say that he had been awakened by one of the friends who advised him the trailer was burning. According to the man, the trailer is owned by his son. Fenlaw was able to contact the son by phone and learned the trailer had been given to him by his girlfriend’s father and was currently uninsured. This case has been forwarded to the county’s fire marshal.

Deputy Austin Cryer took a report of theft from a complainant on CR 2775 who stated two old hand plows and a large cast iron bathtub had been stolen out of her barn sometime in the past two months. The woman provided information about possible suspects and stated she did wish to pursue criminal charges if the property was located. According to the complainant, the missing items are valued collectively at $100. This case was forwarded to CID for continued investigation into the possible suspects.

Deputy Steven Fields was dispatched to Jarvis Christian College following a report from campus security that a handgun had been located in a dorm room. The gun, a Titan .25 pistol, was discovered when one student was moving a fellow student’s property to another room. The student admitted ownership of the gun but stated he only had it for protection. Earnest Landrum, 18, was arrested and transported to jail. He is charged with possessing a firearm in a place where weapons are prohibited.

Deputy Terri Altman took a report of fraud from a complainant who stated his bank account with Southside Bank in Hawkins had several fraudulent charges which originated in Illinois. The man further stated he had notified his bank and learned that $300 worth of charges had cleared his account and several other transactions were pending and could not be stopped. Altman completed an incident report for documentation purposes.

Deputy Dustin Moffett and Sgt. William Burge were dispatched to an address on FM 2225 in reference to a man being shot in the head with a BB or pellet gun. Speaking with the complainant the deputies learned that the man had been mowing his lawn with a riding mower when he was struck in the left side of the head with what he believed to be a BB or pellet. The man went on to say that his neighbor often fired a pellet gun toward his residence and stated he believed the pellet had been fired from the neighbor’s garage.

The deputies were shown a “no trespassing” sign which had holes in it consistent with BB’s or pellets. The deputies were also able to observe the man’s wound which was consistent with having been caused by a BB or pellet. Contact was made with the suspect who denied shooting the man but readily admitted to owning pellet guns which he kept in his garage. Moffett and Burge located several highpowered pellet guns and noted that all of them were loaded and ready to fire. After a brief investigation at the scene, Melvin Leroy Travnichek, 65, of Yantis, was arrested and transported to jail. He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Deputy Tucker George was dispatched to a residence on CR 1885 near Yantis in response to a report of criminal mischief. The complainants stated that their daughter-in-law had shown up on the property to retrieve some of her belongings. The property is divided into two separate lots with the complainants living on one lot and their daughter-in-law previously residing on the other. According to the couple, the woman had received an “order to vacate” and had been in the process of moving out for the past month. On this date a verbal dispute had ensued after which the daughter-in-law threw large rocks through two windows, shattering the glass and causing a hole in drywall inside the house. The complainants wished to have a criminal trespass warning issued for the woman, who had already left the scene prior to George’s arrival. This case remains active awaiting a final determination of the dollar amount of the damage.

Deputy Terri Altman took a report of forgery from a complainant on east SH 154. The woman advised she had placed three envelopes containing checks for bill payment in her mailbox on August 26th and had now learned that none of the checks had arrived at their intended destination. One of the checks, written originally for $120, had been passed at a retail store in Henderson for $214. This case has been forwarded to CID for additional investigation.

Sheriff Jim Brown would like to once again caution citizens that placing mail containing checks into rural mailboxes and raising the flag is a magnet for thieves. Any mail containing checks such as bills, birthday cards, etc. should be taken to the post office to be mailed.
