Quitman can’t hit the right notes against Harmony

Posted

The Harmony Eagles scored early and often in a 67-0 win over the Quitman Bulldogs Friday. The Bulldogs drop to 4-3 on the year and 1-2 in district. The Eagles proved why they are one of the top teams in Class 3A DII. Harmony is 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in district.

Harmony booted the opening kick-off out of bounds and the Bulldogs set up on their own 30. On fourth and 11 at the 29, the Eagles blocked the Bulldog punt. On their first play from scrimmage, Eagle running back Evan Webber scored on a 17-yard run and made the two-point conversion and Harmony led 8-0.

The Bulldogs lost a fumble on their next possession and Webber scored on a 9-yard run. He followed that with a 12-yard run and the Eagles had a 23-0 lead with 6:45 to play in the first quarter.

Harmony scored twice more in the opening quarter and went into the second quarter leading 37-0. Harmony scored two more times and took a dominating 51-0 score at intermission. In the second half, Harmony added 16 more points.

The Bulldogs were missing several players due to injuries including the team’s top two rushers in running back Mason Reynolds and quarterback Ford Tannebaum. Jack Tannebaum had to leave the game, too, after a hard hit put him out of competition. All three of those also played on defense. Running back Hunter Jordan and Luke Williams also missed the game with injuries, and Alex Burman is still unable to play due to medical reasons.

Quitman Head Coach Shane Webber commented on Harmony’s performance. “They just took it to us and beat us in every phase of the game. Getting down early in the game made it tough on us,” Webber said. “We don’t make excuses. Yes, it would have helped if we didn’t have so many starters out, but you can’t make excuses for turnovers.”

The Bulldogs aren’t sure if any of those injured will be able to return for Friday’s game at home against Grand Saline.

“Right now we are not planning for all six of those injured to be able to play. We have some who might probably be able to play, but unfortunately, that also means they probably might not get to play,” Webber said. “We are missing some key skill personnel so we have to move a lot of people around to other positions. Those guys are playing in spots where they have never played and we have to re-teach them for the position where we have moved them.”

“It’s hard to find much of anything good from the Harmony game. I was proud of Carson Dickens. We moved him around in the secondary on defense and moved around in the offensive backfield,” Webber added. “He took a shot early and came back and did a good job. Just knowing Carson came back after getting a painful stinger because he wanted to get back into the game and that impressed me. We are undefeated at home right now and we plan to protect our house this Friday night.”

Quitman takes on Grand Saline at home Friday. The Indians are 0-6 and 0-2 in district with losses to Winona, 28-27 after leading 21-0, and against Harmony, 42-7. Kick-off at Bud Moody is set for 7:30 p.m.
